I am in the process of doing a CNC conversion on a Taig Mill. My mill was
purchased used and was a short bed of a mixed design. My first thoughts
were to modify the lead screws to a 7mm diameter to mate to some spiral
couplers I have. After contacting Taig to purchase some new lead screws so
I could have the use of the mill for the conversion, they talked me into
using their motor mounts and couplers. I'm not really sure if I am happy
with this decision yet. There seems to be a tightness in the couplings as
well as a couple thousands of backlash just in the coupling.

As to the controller, I am using a set of four Parker OEM650 controllers
along with Pacific Scientific Power Max M22 motors at 253 in oz. These are
on the X, Y, and Z axis. I will use a 153 in oz on the A axis, but the
same controller. These controllers are able to handle 75V at a max of
around 7amps, and will micro step down to around 56000 SPR. Way to fine
for what I am using, but at a Micro step of around 1600 SPR, they should
work very well By the way, I am also doing a CNC conversion on the Taig
lathe. I'll use the 153 in oz motors through a pair of Pacific Scientific
6410 Controllers. The spec's on these controllers are about the same as
the parker OEM650's.

I just finished mounting the X, Y, and Z motors today, along with the new
couplings and leadscrews and nuts. I have some cable work to do now so it
may be another week or so before I get to run some G-code on it. I also
have to tune the Turbo CNC settings for the motors as well as run in all
the new hardware and dial it into alignment.

This all sounded so simple when I started.
