CNC, DRO's and backlash

I've been thinking about some of what was said about using DRO feedback
to compensate for backlash during axis reversal. While maybe not
optimal, do you really NEED to measure anything except when the axis
starts moving in the desired direction. The software already knows when
the axis reverses and I understand some software lets you enter a value
for backlash. So you are left just needing to know when it actually
starts to move in the desired direction.
Basically, just enough to make sure the software and hardware is in
sync.
