Hi,
Sorry I've been so quiet on the list lately but my time is currently a bit
limited as my wife is in hospital with heart problems and so I am only
managing to get my mail down every other day or so.
Anyway, I have just loaded Mandrake 7 onto one of my P100 boxes (it came
free on a cover disk with PCPlus magazine) and it went like a dream! This is
definitely the easiest install of linux I have ever done and it so far looks
quite stable. It is based on the 2.2.14 kernel and is supposedly completely
compatible with Red Hat stuff - uses RedHat .rpm's etc. but has been
'stripped down' so it only works on Pentium machines. Having failed to
manage to port EMC to the 2.2.14 kernel so far, I guess my next job will be
to 'dumb it down' to a 2.2.13 kernel and try to get it running EMC - I'll
let you know how I get on.
For anyone wanting to play about with linux I would definitely recommend
Mandrake, especially since it easily coped with installation on a buggy
motherboard which RH5.2 complained about, an old network card which
RH6.1wouldn't recognise and an ATI Rage II + DVD video card/ old Samsung
monitor combination which neither RH6.1nor SUSE 6.3 would set up properly.
