phase drive ? of stepper chips

Hi all,

I was looking at the differenet stepper chips I have pulled from
things (laser fax etc) and it seems the common control is a phase
control.

Is there some simple starting point to a novice who wants to
understand how to get a step and direction signal to control one of
these chips ?
