A series I will already be converted to cnc. I assume you mean
conversion to a PC based control. Bridgeport series I machines are
especially good because the stepper motor controls they orginally
came with broke down so often that you may find the machine has nice
unworn ways from spending most of its time waiting for the
electronics repair guy.
If you have the room (and it doesn't take *that* much more room), may
I suggest you expand your search to include some other cnc PC-
conversion candidates like Hurco, Lagun, Shizuoka (the one I got).
These are all of comparable quality to a bridgeport. If you live in
a largish city and can find your local cnc machinery dealer, you may
have luck asking if he has an older cnc machine with bad controls
that he could let go cheap. Worked for me. You can also *sometimes*
find good cnc deals on ebay, but caveot emptor!
Good luck
Rick
PS, here is a pic of my Shizuoka bedmill which is not *that* much
bigger than a series I. It cost me about $500 to have a local rigger
with a boom crane truck to deliver it from about 50 miles away and
have it positioned in my garage. Money well spent because this baby
weighs 7000 lbs!!!
