Acu-Rite III 2-Axis DRO: Need advice.

I've had different brands of DRO's on my other Series I 2J2 Mills but
I'm having a problem with an Acu-Rite III 2-Axis DRO on a 2J2 Mill I
recently bought. When turned on all I get is a small "1" on the left
side of the readout on both Axis. When I press "Zero Reset" on either
Axis all numbers light up rapidly scrolling but when I release the
button I return to the small "1". I called Acu-Rite but they are not
familiar with the problem but are ready to sell me a new display. I
switched scales and also unhooked the scales with the same results.
The scales are the later Acu-Rite 5 Scales. I'm familiar with the
need to input an Access Code on the latest Acu-Rite DRO 200M but the
Acu-Rite III didn't need an Access Code or so I thought. Any thoughts?
