how do you determine motor size and drive ratio

Hi all,
I know that this question is typically answered by trial or by what
other people are using so maybe someone can tell me what they are
using and how well it works...
I am thinking about converting my enco mill/drill. I have the larger
model which has 8 turn/inch leadscrews. I do not want to convert to
ballscrews. I was thinking about using some 600 oz/in steppers for
this in a direct 1:1 drive ratio (for a resolution of .000625... if I
am doing the math right). Should a motor that size be powerful enough
to move the table? Or would I need to reduce the ratio?
Thanks,
Chris Coleman
