Michael,
You may want to start by looking at the Mach2 controller www.artofcnc.ca.
Art has created a fine CNC controller that works in a windows XP machine.
To interface to the controller through the parallel port, I sell a breakout
board.
In addition to a breakout board, you will need a power supply (transformer,
bridge rectifier and a capacitor) Then you will need a stepper motor driver
like the Gecko drives www.geckodrive.com .
On my web page, I have a section on building the power supply.
This should get you started.
