Too small for what? A mini-mill? Probably OK. A Bridgeport? I really
think you will have problems.

It depends on the leadscrews. For a Sherline, with 20 TPI screws, you don't
need much reduction. For a Bridgeport with 5 TPI screws, you almost
certainly
do.
