Bard,
it depends on the size of sense resistors used.
VRef is the reference volts at the input to a comparator set by a pot.
The other comparator input looks at the sense resistor volts.
This limits the output current.
If you use 0.5 ohm (non inductive) sense resistors, VRef/0.5 = Ioutput.
The max current for L298 (L297 has none) is 2 Amps. So VRef will be set to 1 Volt.
Don't forget the heatsink.
