There are a number of instantiations of using the mouse guts as encoders
(which they indeed are) for various applications. The robot hobbiest clans
use them for servo positions and other assorted things. BEWARE, however,
this robot stuff can be addictive. Some are even quadrature outputs. It does
take a lot of fussing to glue one together and the resolution is (in my
experience) less than 100 PPR. The ones that I have dissected were 56, 64
and 72. There are other cool things inside as well - such as pretty good
microswitches, and the current market value for dead mice is <$1.99.

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Mouse Guts DRO
Probably a stupid question but I've been experimenting with Visual Basic 6
and looking at a dead serial mouse on my desk and the thought of using mouse
guts for an encoder in a poor man's PC based DRO came to mind. There must
be a reason it won't work or others would have done it by now but I'd like
to hear comments.
