EMC question on machine code M3

I have tried and can not get the M3 (spindle on) and M5 (spindle
off) commands to work in auto mode. The work fine when you are in
MDI mode and in manual mode the f9 key works fine.

Why is spindle on and spindle off not allowed in auto?

I want to be able to shut the spindle off after it completes a part.
