Detect Stepper pulses

I'm working with new PC hardware and software to drive the steppers
on my knee mill. FWIW, its a Galil computer on a PCI card mounted in
a PC.
Anyway, I'm issueing move commands to the galil card, and it reports
back a move was issued. But nothing happens at the stepper. I know
the stepper and driver are in working condition. (they work under my
existing Ahha PC control)
At this pint, I'd like to check for step pulses in the wiring. Can't
afford a 'scope. Is there some kind of cheap probe that can check
for step pulses?
