A3977 Current setting (Danged search changes!)

I asked this and was answered a loong time ago but, Yahoo wont search
beyond the visible page.
Anyway, I took a (looong) break from CNC topics and now I'm unsure
about one aspect of controlling steppers with the A3977 chip.
Given a motor with a rating of 1.7V@4.7A = 7.99 watts. If I drive it
at 24 volts then its current requirement is down around 0.33 amps -
Correct?
Do I set I-Trip to 0.33 amps or does it actually require a 4.7A
setting? Impossible with this chip, it only does 2.5A I know.
My memory says I set I-Trip to limit the current to ~0.33 amps. In a
different discussion a person is saying you still need to supply 4.7A
(short duration instantaneous current draw) so you'd have to set
ITrip to the max.
Thanks in Advance,
