There are really about two technologies that use reflective-looking
metal
tapes. One is optical, and there is either a scale etched, embossed or
otherwise
imprinted on the tape. Yes, it will be VERY fine, but a powerful
magnifying
glass should do. You still won't be able to see the individual lines,
but you
will be able to see that something is there. Some of these tapes are
gold-
colored.

The other system uses magnetic patterns written on the tape much like
on magnetic recording tape.
