IT RUNS!

Hi to my friends on the lists,
I'm tickled to death! I just finished making four studs for the steam
chest, and realized that I had enough parts to give my "Baby Beam
Engine" a run!
I fired up the compressor in the garage, connected up the air line, and
with a gentle push, the engine roared to life! It's been merrily
running on about 3 PSI for over an hour, the only problem being the pin
on the top end of the connecting rod falling out! This pin wasn't made
yet, I just used a short piece of .1875" diameter drill rod.
I have many short studs to make, which will replace the SHCS' seen in my
photos. And I haven't really polished any parts, so there's
considerable work to do there as well.
But it's a great joy seeing this engine running! It was about A year
ago when I started the drawings. The actual hardware was started last
October. About 6 months to build, and I've been making parts for two
engines.
It's a 3/4" bore by 1 1/2" stroke beam engine. Beam is a little over 6"
long, and the engine is about 6" high. The base (scrap plywood for now)
is about 12" wide. It was built entirely on my CNC'd Sherline mill and
lathe. The materials were aluminum, brass, 12L14 steel and drill rod.
I hope to make plans available at a later date.
I've been posting a few pix on the SherlineCNC, LittleEngines, and other
lists, and a few days ago I got a few pix up on my OWN website. There
are some "almost finished" pix there, as well as three other steam
engines I have built with my Sherline mill and lathe. More pix later!
