Then again, if you allready have the mounts, it might be simpler to couple a
small servo, (dead or alive, but unpowered), to the far end of the lead/ball
screw, and just power the encoder. This would be a good use of old dead servos,
and might be a good intermediate step, in converting from steppers to servos, in
that you could test the system as you go, without losing functionality during
the conversion.
