Hi Christopher:
Helical gears will not help you at all.
You'll still have backlash because the gears need it to function properly.
You'll also have increased friction with helicals vs bevels.
Spiral bevels will not gain you anything either.
You need to come up with a parallel shaft arrangement if you are serious
about eliminating backlash in the drive.
Either direct coupling or timing belt drives will work.
Other arrangements can be made to roughly get you there too, but they are
all Kludges at one level or another.
