IMO, a lead screw is the way to go though. A lot smoother operation.
Also IMO backlash isn't the issue with a lathe that it is with a
mill. Look at all the old manual lathes. They might have a 1/4 turn
of the screw backlash through the gear train, and another 0.030" in
the nut, and they can still cut well because they are always loaded
in the same direction.
