I went to look at some manual lathes today (in the Seattle area) and
there was a big Hitachi cnc mill going pretty cheap. They were
wanting $2500, but I bet it could be picked up for $1500-$2000. It
is a 1981 virtually identical to the one in this ebay auction:

Which has no relation to this other than a lot of pics and a
description. :-) I would be interested in it if I didn't have my
already-taking-up-honkin-space Shizuoka mill because it has a working
Fanuc 6M control and Fanuc 5 and 10 DC servo motors. A resourcefull
person could sell the 6M control and the servo amps and other goodies
on ebay for $2000-$3000 and be left with a free mill. Well, free if
you already happen to have some copeley servo amps and Jon's pico
system or something :-)
It is a bit bizarre because the table only moves in x, the head moves
in y and z! This is so you can machine semi trucks or something on
the bed! :-) I think the travels were 32" x, 18.5"z and 16.5" y or
something. The box ways and ballscrews looked decent, as did the
spindle motor and servo motors. Of course I am a total amateur at
this so don't take my word.
Well, that is about it...if you are in Seattle, happen to have a lot
of garage space and want to upgrade your sherline like i did, I will
put you in touch with the seller.
