Digispeed and index pulse

I want to connect my spindle index sensor (digikey QRB1114) to my
controller via the digispeed breakout board and 3.5mm jack at the
motor controller.

The manual indicates that the following is available at the breakout
board 5V+, 0V, and spindle index. It gives the corresponding
connections on the 3.5mm stereo jack plug. However it makes no
mention of the need for a series resistor for the LED, or pull up
resistor for the phototransistor. I have checked out the connections
from the breakout board to the 3.5 jack and they are not what I
expected as below.

breakout 3.5 Resistance Comment
5V+ 5V+ 0 Expected
5V+ Index 10.3K Not expected
0V 0V 0 Expected
0V Index 0 not expected.

Has anyone in the group connected the index sensor via the breakout?
If you have how did you avhieve it, and did you need any further
circuitry.

Normally I would have directed my questions to Peter Homann who
supplied the digispeed, but he is away until October at the Athens
games and I would like to get this completed before then.

Any help much appreciated.
