Dan, thanks for responding, No I do not have a 470 uf cap on 1 and 2 of the Geckos. I remember when I was wiring it up thinking that the leads weren't much over a foot and it shouldnt be necessary. looking at the leads from power supply to geckos this morning they are probably like 24". So these go on the motor leads or the leads from power supply? The 100 uf cap is exactly what blew. Strangely, it never made any more noises today. I ran it all day and it ran perfectly. I went over it closely this morning looking for anything that appeared suspect, took an airhose and blew out around everything and i seen a few tiny chips expelled but thats it. And they werent in close proximity to any electronics.

A 470uf low ESR cap? Whats the voltage rating for it? 100 volt? Better yet do you have a Mouser part number for it possibly. I'll order or go over to RS electronics they are just around the corner. Thats a great place, huge showroom which allows someone like me who isnt that knowledgable about electronics to actually see things before I purchase them.

I still think that it was voltage spikes causing it yesterday and the day before. I have a surge suppressor but its the CVS pharmacy variety. This retrofit went from experiment to in-service in a matter of minutes and many things that were meant to be temporary were left in that state because they seemed to be working fine. The bench was loaded with details to be machined.

When you said the cap blew inside the Z axis Gecko and the first Gecko
failed that was a clue. If your leads from the big cap is more than a foot
long the and you don't have a 470 uf cap on the power terminals then the
internal cap gets very hot and will eventually fail. I discovered this by
accident one day while I had a gecko sitting on my bench running a motor. I
had the case off and noticed that there was a odor of something getting hot.
I felt around and found the 100uf cap inside the case was really hot. I
installed a 470 UF LESR cap and it cooled down to ambient temperature. There
is a warning in the Gecko manual about using long power leads from your big
cap.
