That is a really cool looking first part!

I don't know if it's your camera or lighting, but the material looks kind of
strange. The shine in the pictures makes it look like Hematite ore; shiny,
polished iron oxide stones.

I've seen an idea to similar to this on the Antique's Roadshow. It was a
chess set, but some, or all, I can't quite remember, of the pieces were
sitting on top of a cage like structure like the part you cut. Inside the
cage was a spherical ball like cage. Within this was another spherical cage.
I don't remember if there was another within this.

What was really impressive about it was that the entire set had been had
made from Ivory. Some guy had cut the entire structure, a multiple of times,
by hand and these things were tiny; the inside spheriod was about 1/4 of an
inch, or 6mm, in diameter.

The set was undamaged as far as I remember, despite being decades or
centuries old, and was going for a price measured in low hundreds. Criminal!
