Well, I AM a Texan, so while I consider myself "liberal", in Texas it means that I at least support the death penalty and perhaps a
bit more (the phase "blue dog Democrat", is operative). More importantly, I am from a state in which I have watched the quality of
education, and that during the term of the Republican "education governor", sink to an absolute low. While we have moved from mid
40s in national teacher salary ranking to mid 30s, due to GWB's presidential aspirations, I am pretty sure that the teachers have
yet to see any of the promised increase from two years ago, let alone last session. While we increase the budget for infrastructure
(roads), we play fast and loose with the notion of "quality" of our most important future resource, the education of our kids. And,
BTW don't even start me on vouchers or other "alternative" educational paths. While I am Catholic, I believe religion based
education is inherently elitist, often racist and flat out wrong for this society. We need top notch public education, period.
