I have Cleveland Motion Control Servos that run 6000 rpm when hooked
directly 60Vdc and draw about 300mA, but when connected to my Gecko 320
and apply a step rate of 30000 with TCNC, I only get about 450 rpm out
of the motor and a whole bunch of heat. The only gecko tuning that I
have done is by sound, I will break out the scope this weekend to see
how well I did. My intent was to run them around 4000 rpm into a 40:1
reducer (came with motor) and then to a 1" spur gear to my rack. This
would give about 315 ipm rapids for wood routing. I guess adding the
step multiplier would get me to 4500 rpm but what about the heat? The
motors are MH2630 with a continuous torque of 70 oz/in and a peak of
350 in/oz.

Thanks for the help

Encoder resolution? Its my understanding that with the 320 we shouldnt go above 250 quadrature or 1000 count per rev. Also the step rate is a bit low. TCNC supposedly is capable of 125k/s pulse rate. 30k is low for DOS based. Mach2 puts out 45K. The motors should not be heating with no load unless the gain adjustment is set way too high. Try turning the gain down on the drive. Does running it directly off power supply/capacitors develop the same temperature? Those motors sound a bit small for the gantry of a router. Thats only like 4.5 lb-in. Trading RPM for torque thru a reduction is going to require low resolution encoders and high pulse rate software. The Gecko 320 is capable of 250 Khz. step rate.
