Losing steps

Hello all
In my day job (and I will follow the same in my home shop) I use a DRO setup
to show all my movements for XYZ or in my case AYZ.
This way if my machine missed steps (and it has and does but not as often
since I slowed down some of the defaults) the position is not the same on
the DRO screen as it is on my software screen.
This is a great double check for me.
Now if it misses the steps say z axis down by .002" and then .002" on the
way out.... you will never know. That sucks. Then you measure what you did
and toss it out.
But the DRO is the only positive double check you got. Ya, expensive
but......
