Adam,
Many people build similar machines out of PVC. It works like wood,
can be plastic welded (cheap welder a harborfreight), is durable and
is dimensionally stable. It can be tapped and drilled easily too.
I think there is a guy crankorgan.com that sells plans that may help
you.
