Hi Paul,

Another cheap option is HTD toothed belt. Either use the belt
conventionally or have a length fixed at either end and use it in a
similar way to a rack. You need a couple of idler rollers to ensure you
get about 180 degrees of wrap around the pulley. For pricing look on the
RS web site <www.rswww.com>. As an example a 2.8 metre circumference
8M20 belt (order no 475-0759)
<javascript:openWindow('http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/browse/PriceInfoPopUp.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1084094631.1108043162@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccadddkiljfficfngcfkmdgkldfil.0&cacheID=uknetscape&3285496010=3285496010&prodoid=9717491','width=470,height=500,left=100,top=100,resizable=no,scrollbars=no,toolbar=no,status=no','price')>
is £17.14 + vat. 22 teeth pulleys (350-6719) are £7.57 ea + vat. Postage
is free.

I used belt on my plasma cutter and it works really well.
