I know the cheaper ball lead screws how a very rough finish when you
look at them under a microscope, which will cause interference under
load and will deflect. Take a buffing wheel with a 1200 diamond grit
polishing compound and make that baby shine. It will not remove more
than .0001 to .0002 of metal at the most, it will not remove all of
the roughness, but you will notice the difference. The riding edge of
the balls will now roll without interference causing the grating
sound and your mill will cut more accuritely.
