No, Mach2, Mach3, etc. are NOT closed loop. They are open loop, as far
as the computer
is concerned. Curiously, Mach2 and Mach3 can display the position on
the screen based on the
encoders, but the program does not USE that information, even to tell if
it has lost steps!

I have a more cost-effective solution.

1. 3 Pico Systems PWM servo amps ($300)

2. One Universal PWM Controller ($250)

3. encoders ($147 ?)

4. motors ($120 ?)

5. Power Supply (I can provide a 1 KW 100 V power supply for $150.)

6. EMC - free download or CDROM for $10

7. I can provide a used Dell computer with EMC loaded and configured
for your system
for $150. You will need to provide a video monitor.

So, the minimum, using your motor and encoder prices, comes to $817, if
you provide the
power supply.
