Hi Lawrence,
A mandrel is simply a rod or tube that is the same outside diameter as
the root diameter of the thread. If you push it tightly onto the end of
the screw you can unwind the nut onto it. The mandrel is there to make
sure the balls don't fall out. They are normally plastic or maybe cardboard.
