Need help on compiling Axis.

I' ve had no luck building AXIS v 1.0 downloaded from unpythonic.

I installed from the cd (image from sherline) using the desktop icon
'install to harddrive'
I chose no options ( all files went where the install sent them ).
I downloaded the tarball , and unpacked it .
I used
env PLAT=linux_rtai EMCSOURCEDIR=/usr.local EMCROOT=/usr/local python
setup.py build
I added EMCROOT because the web page said to use EMCSOURCEDIR and the
included README said EMCROOT.
So, suspenders and a belt, shouldnt hurt.
I got an error saying the python installation was invalid.
Jeff Epler suggested that pythin-dev wasnt installed.
Correct, it wasnt , so I used apt-get to get it.
The next execution of the above command line made it thru the 1st compile
stanza, then broke into reams of errors.
Jeff had mentioned that I may need to untar some other sources, so I found
4 other tarballs and unpacked them.
I still get the reams of errors.

The first error is
extensions/emcmodule.cc:21:18 rcs.hh no such file or folder

well, it does exist,it's in /usr/local/rcslib/src.

So the system want some things in some places.
But this location of files just doesnt happen with a plain install.

What needs to be done?

thanks for any help.

TomP
