Sounds like you have a 2-start thread. There are two grooves instead of the usual one, each groove makes 4 turns in an inch.

My mind is going south today I'm having a problem finding the
pitch on a screw. The count of the threads is 8 in a 1 inch length.
However when the nut is on the shaft, and I turn it 4 turns gives me
an inch of travel.
