Any one using RS232 to talk to servos via RS232?

Just curious how many folks there are who are using CNC software that
talks to a servo controller via RS232. Seems like most people just use
step and dir via the parallel port. I've seen a handful of CNC
software packages out there that use RS232, but it seems like most use
a proprietary controller and command set over RS232.
