At first, I thought this was SPECIFICALLY addressed to ME, and not the group,
until I looked, again! I have had the same hassle with a new Nikon E950.
Will do-in four AA alkalines in ten, twelve shots, unless you turn-OFF the
LCD viewer, which makes composition virtually impossible. So, I spent about
$5.00 per cell and got NiHydride AA cells from Radio Shack, and they "hold
up" about as well as four sets of "new" alkalines, AND are re-chargeable
several thousands of times, they say. So, much cheaper "per amp-hour", and
they last longer between-charges than throw-aways.
I have pondered a gell-cell "motorcycle battery" on a belt, with a cable, but
then I would look like a commando with a 0.50 cal. ammo-belt around his ugly
gut! In ten more years, the LCD's will draw microamps, and, like throw-away
pocket calculators, just a tiny "solar cell array" will collect sufficient
energy "for free"! (I had a TI "Scientific" calculator 25 years back with
built-in NiCad's, and that had to be recharged often. Now, "same logic" uses
built-in solar-cell which is "happy" with light from dim overhead light!
It'll happen!)
