How fast does your X axis move when you have it running at full speed ?
One of the problems with belt reduciton is that one needs to match the
maximum desired speed with maximum speed of the motor. that way, you
get what you want and don't have 3/4 of hte motor that never gets used.
As for the horrible noise at slow speed. are you running both steppers
from one gecko ? how are you synchronozing the two motors on the same
axis ?
The belt/gear reduction is not that hard.
