Lathe controller

I have been following the remarks on Maxnc and the various links for
control software.
Can anyone recomend a controller for a lathe other than Ahha.
Criteria must be reasonable cost and must be able to do threading
from a spindle encoder input.
From what I have seen so far this puts EMC and Flashcut out of the
running unless I am mistaken.
Stepper drive prefered but can handle servo's if nessesary.
