$1100 servo motor/Windows retrofit

Some things I thought you might be interested in. I bought a complete MaxNC
outfit and have never had the time to put it together. I just joined this
group and became inspired to do it. Then, yesterday, I recieve my monthly
copy of a great little magazine called Nuts & Volts. The lead story is about
a CNC retrofit using servo motors(and all that implies) with built in
encoders, each motor is driven by a PIC based driver and the software is a
"Windows" based program called PIC-Servo CNC. The total cost for everything
to convert a sherline mill (and surely others) is about $1100 using new off
the shelf motors (surplus you might save $200-400). The best part is that
it's not DOS based because the PIC drivers coordinate the three axies which
is why the actual control software is usually in DOS. With Windows you don't
have to use those arcane G codes to any great degree.

The phone number of the outfit is (I think) 1-800-287-9432. The guy who
wrote the article is named Jeffery Kerr who I think owns the outfit that
supplies the PIC drivers. That outfit is called Hdb. I can't tell you how
jazzed I am. I learned the G codes years ago but never liked working with
them, most CAD programs being so much more intuitive and all.

I think I'll call em tommorrow. Maybe he'll publish the article or something
to this group/mac
