Re: Lathe conversion to CNC

hi Larry

my conversion is using steppers as i have a mill drill i converted to
cnc about 4 years ago that runs on emc2 so i use the same pc and
controller and just plug in the lathe or the mill emc lets you choose
different configuration at startup
if you are after a simple solution i would go for steppers just for
the ease of setup the only problem with steppers i have found on the
lathe is you may have to drop your spindle speed back to thread as the
steppers may not be able to keep up. mine will thread at about 800 rpm
on a 10 tpi thread any faster and it loses steps
on my lathe i removed all the handels and feed system of the front of
the lathe and machined up a few new parts to take the ball screws
(these are not as necessary as they are on a mill but i would highly
recomend putting them on)
i will take a coupe of pics and post them for you to look at they may
help with your conversion
if you use emc2 you will need a encoder on the spindle about 1000ppr
is a good size
turbocnc only requires a index pulse for threading which is a bit
easier to set up but i prefer emc2 as you can turn the spindle at
different speeds and emc will make the steppers match your speed its
pretty cool actually turning the spindle and watch the zaxis turning
like it was driven by back gears

cheers
peter
