George,
A couple day with the tutorials should get you started.
If you get stuck on something I may be able to help.
For letters you basically extrude them up the height that you want.
While you are at it you may want to look at the MecSoft web page
www.mecsoft.com and look at their Rhino Art program. It allows you to do
some fancy things in Rhino very easily.
