Denford, QuestechCNC Mill

I recently picked up a Denford micro mill with the smart step tecnology
(Approx.8-10 years old) and am looking for any advise as to either:
test existing unit in preparation to installing there upgrade chip and
software or to start off fresh and gut unit. I am very new to this but
am usually a quick learner. I did not get a computer or software with
this unit, it is a enclosed table top sherline with safety's and
electronics in the rear. I did get a wiring schematic and was able to
power up the spindle okay but that's about it.
