Not the easiest of starting points, but http://telin.ugent.be/~ps/stepper/ has
done it from a computer :)

To be honest, the circuitry to make this work step and direction will probably
cost more than just picking up an A3967 - I'm seeing them at 1.92GBP and
they give you selection of full to 1/8 step mode.
