A friend of mine made a dump bed for an old pickup truck and used
a scrap power steering pump to operate the hydraulic cylinder.
He couldn't quite dump 2500 lbs, but part of that was due to the
placement of the cylinder. With this in mind, I don't see why a
power steering unit wouldn't work. I suspect the control valves,
etc. would be more of a concern.
