check the motor by connecting it to one of the other drives and this
drive by connecting it as it was one of the other axes, that will rule
out a fault in your hardware.

Then try driving your x and y from the z axis in the software to check
there is nothing strage there.

Or do you just have your step and direction pins reversed?
