Nate,

The original equipment stepper motors were typically
900 to 1100 oz-in motors. The Z axis needs just a big
of a motor as the X and Y due to the forces required
for drilling with large drill bits.

You may have weak motors. Unfortunately the original
motors could be de-magnetized partially by over current
and the Bridgeport drivers were notorious for failing
with shorted transistors that dumped full power supply
current into the motor.

If you do decide to use 1200 oz-in modern NEMA34
motors, remember that as far as the Gecko driver is
concerned they act much like a NEMA42 with regards
to the jumper setting.
