Ah, that's why some older, but not much older, encoders have "LED" in their part number - to
distinguish them from ones with incandescant light sources. More recently the "LED" has
been dropped, as now being taken for granted.

Thank you, respondents. I now feel more comfortable bidding on older, and therefore
affordable, industrial encoders. It seems reasonable to assume that if they function to begin
with, odds are good that they will continue to do so.
