For a low voltage low power requirement I would get the little driver from
http://interinar.com/stepper%20driver%20BSD-02.htm they run off just about anything from 9V to 30 VDC. The are about $65.
I have used some of their other drivers in the past and have been pleased with them.

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Small Motors
Hello All,
I need some help on some Vexta17 PK244-01AA DC.1.2Amp 3.30Ohm 2Phase
1.8/step Motors. I have 6 and want to use some of these to regulate
the variable switch on a VSR 2.0 HP router, and mill motors. All the
motors have Variable speed controls, and have used a tunner knob from
an old radio tunner to run the pulley, to the motor, and pulley, and
the cable, for the link to the motor. Hope you can undrestand this.
Now I want to find, build, (buy, not such a good idea), and driver
for this ,and a power supply. I have some regulated PS. 5V and 12
volt. and run 5amps. What would be the most cost effected method to
get these motors to work. As I am not too familar, with Electronics, but
have soldered and done some simple boards, but nothing to where I
could size a driver, and such. Can Anyone give me a direction as to
what I could use to get these motors to work. I looked on KitsRUs, and
don't know any more now, then I did looking for something. Appreciate
any Help. I would like to build, if I can. Thanks For Reading,
Thanks, Hank S.
