If I understand correctly, you need quite some pulses when you want to
do threading on the lathe. As this will only be done at slower speeds,
eg 200rpm, this would allow emc to properly read the counts: 200 * 100
pulses / 60 = 330Hz. No problem there. Even 1000 rpm = 1600Hz is ok.
I think you still have to multiply this by 2 (on=baseperiod, off=next
period).

It would be nice if I can also regulate the spindle speed, but this is
of lesser importance to me.

Making something to control the speed is the next step.
