I really like the carriage you built to manipulate your angle grinder to
grind the slideway mounting surfaces flat. It reminds me a little of Jon
Elson's toolpost grinder contraption to grind the ways on his 15" Sheldon
lathe (http://pico-systems.com/sheldon.html about a third of the way down
the page).

I know all about warping post-welding problems. The first time I tried to
make a "ladder" shape in steel tubing, I started at one end and worked
toward the other. By the time I finished, with one end held to the bench,
the other end was nearly 1" off the table over a 36" length. The next time,
I clamped everything down and worked from both ends toward the middle. It
worked much better!
