series capacitors

If you decide to use capacitors in series, keep in mind that the effective capacitance value is reduced for series capacitors. Two 140,000 uF in series is equivalent to 70,000 uf at double the voltage. Three 140,000 uF in series is equivalent to about 47,000 uF at three times the rated voltage. As stated, you must use a resistor divider across the capacitors to prevent exceeding the voltage on any one capacitor. If they have slightly different capacitance values, when placed in series the lower capacitance value one will charge to a higher voltage than the one half or one third expected, and can be damaged.
